Road Trip Essentials

Summertime to me means a lot of things and one of them are road trips. The weather is nicer so there’s more places to venture out to.

I’ve always been a fan of road trips. You don’t need much besides some gas, good company and a destination. Although I wish I could travel the world right now this girl has some huge goals she’s trying to accomplish so I can’t blow all my money on vacations. But I can still get away while being on a budget.

This past weekend I ventured out on 6+ hour road trip with my best friends. This was our second annual girls’ getaway. We hope to do this every year as a way for us to spend some quality BFF time together. Last year we went to New York City and this year we went to Atlantic City. Little by little we are moving further down the coast 🙂

We decided to drive down to our destination both times to save money on airfare, to save time waiting around for a bus and we got to pick up and go as we pleased. Plus, we get to be together and enjoy one another’s company.

Like a vacation, a road trip requires a list of essential items that needs to be brought along for the ride.

Below are 8 items that I found essential for our road trip to make it more enjoyable and budget friendly.

1. Snacks:

It’s cheaper to bring snacks with you then having to buy them from a rest area. You might just make some healthier choices too. Here are some snack ideas of what to bring with you.

  • Baby carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Hummus
  • Pretzels
  • Chips
  • Crackers
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Deli meat/pepperoni
  • Cubed cheese
  • Granola bars
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Popcorn

2. Hydration:

Water, water and more water! It might mean more rest stops, but at least you’ll be hydrated.

3. Music Playlist:

We definitely had a dance party in the car! I created a playlist on Spotify and was able to play it via the Bluetooth in my car. Get the tunes crankin’ and the music blastin’!

4. Cash:

We went through so many tolls on this journey. Luckily, we had cash (& exact change!) for all the tolls. You’ll also need money for gas and any other miscellaneous expenses.

5. GPS (in car or on the phone):

Unless you’ve been to the destination before or don’t mind getting lost and letting the road be your guide, you will need to know how to get there. You might even need GPS in case there are detours along the way.

6. Travel Mug:

This was especially important for me since we were leaving early in the morning and I didn’t have a chance to have my morning coffee at home. I brought along my travel mug and enjoyed it in the car. No need to stop at your local coffee shop or on the highway, when you have your java fix with you.

7. Comfy Clothes:

Being that we were going to be in the car for a while, I wanted to be as comfortable as possible. For myself, this mean yoga pants, tee shirt and a comfy pair of sneakers.

8. Cell Phone Charger:

Since I was using my cell phone as my GPS I needed to bring my cell phone charger with me.

9. Bonus: Laughter!

I can’t emphasize this one enough. Being in the car with my girlfriends for 6+ hours did not feel that long because we had so much fun! We cracked jokes, reminisced and just caught up on what’s going on in each other’s lives.

So now that you have your road trip essentials find a new destination to head to. Like I mentioned before all you really need to start is some gas, good company and a destination.
